Academic Standing

What you need to know about academic standing as an undergraduate student

Each faculty conducts an Academic Review yearly by checking each student's grades and course progression. As a result of this review, students receive an academic standing. Academic standing is a way for students and faculties to track progress towards degrees. Students who do not meet their faculty’s academic review requirements will receive an email from their faculty in the spring or summer months (typically mid-May to end of July)* with their academic review results and important next steps.

*Email can be delayed for varying reasons such as deferrals and course grade processing.

Here are a few different scenarios to help understand the process and any necessary action steps.

Scenario 1 | Good Standing

Standing

Jordyn’s academic review places her in Good Standing.

What it means

Good Standing means that Jordyn has made progress towards her degree by meeting the grade requirements and course progression at this time.

Next steps

Although not mandatory, a semester check-in with the Student Success Centre’s academic support team could help build upon her academic skillsets.

Scenario 2 | Academic Probation

Standing

Alice is placed on Academic Probation, for the first time.

What it means

Although Alice was very close to meeting the minimum grade requirements and course progression of their program at this time, they did not quite meet the grades.

Next steps

It would be highly encouraged that Alice connect with the Student Success Centre and their faculty advising office for support in their next academic year and for advice on course selection.

Scenario 3 | Required to Withdraw

Standing

Ahmed is Required to Withdraw (RTW) after receiving an academic probation standing following an academic probation standing from the year before.

What it means

Although again very close, Ahmed has not met the minimum requirements of their program. As Ahmed has already been on Academic Probation in the past, they are required to withdraw from their faculty.

Next steps

Ahmed would receive an email directly from their faculty in the spring/summer months. Ahmed needs to follow the instructions as per this email to learn about their options and important deadlines associated with their next steps.

NOTE: If Ahmed is enrolled in an Academic Turnaround Program (ATP) participating faculty and has not engaged in the program before, they may be eligible to apply to the program for an opportunity to regain their academic standing.

Scenario 4 | Required to Withdraw

Standing

Ted is Required to Withdraw (RTW) due to a low GPA.

What it means

Ted has not met his degree requirements. Ted will be required to withdraw from the University of Calgary.

Next steps

Ted would receive an email directly from his faculty in the spring/summer months. It’s important Ted follow the instructions as per this email which outlines his options, including important deadlines.

NOTE: If Ted is enrolled in an ATP participating faculty and hasn’t engaged in the program before, he may be eligible to apply to the program as an opportunity to regain his academic standing.
