UCalgary alumni appointed to Order of Canada
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, announced 120 new appointments to the Order of Canada on Dec. 28, 2019.
Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is one of this country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation.
Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, BA’85, MA’91, received the highest honour, Companion of the Order of Canada, for his long-standing career in politics and for his service to the nation as the 22nd prime minister of Canada. In 2004, Harper co-founded the modern Conservative Party of Canada and won three successive national elections, in 2006, 2008, and 2011.
UCalgary alumnus Gordon Hoffman, MEd’71, was awarded the Order of Canada for his community engagement, leadership and philanthropy in support of charities and community organizations throughout Alberta. Hoffman, a lawyer, has volunteered his time on over 100 charitable and community organization. Three charities that he is heavily involved with locally include Project Warmth, Alberta Champions and Operation Kickstart.
Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date. The complete list of Order of Canada recipients announced on Dec. 28 can be found on the Governor General of Canada website.
