Grade 4 at the RAO

The grade four program is offered during the day or the evening. We explore what is a planet, moon, star, and galaxy, and how we conceptualize the scope of the universe. A short presentation discusses star composition, distance and how to detect possible exoplanets. We pose the question of how astronomers know what they know. The answer involves an introduction to light and optics.

Students will then complete a light and optics concepts workshop that involves refraction and reflection, observing refraction with a prism and through optical spheres and shapes. If the sky is clear, we can observe the sun during the day, or the night sky in the evening.

Finally, we will tour the observatory and discuss our research as it fits with the grade four curriculum. Students are encouraged to share their big astrophysics questions and learn how astronomers here in Calgary are adding to our understanding of space.

Curriculum Connections – Grade Four Science

The universe includes all of space and everything in it. Observing objects in space helps us connect Earth to its place in the universe.

  • How light and optics are the foundation of astronomy
  • How astronomers use tools such as the telescope to observe objects that are a vast distance from earth
  • How astronomers define planet, moon, star and galaxy
  • The scope of the universe and ways to think about the incredible distances and vastness of space.
  • The solar year and how the sun is moving in the sky on a daily, monthly and yearly cycle

We would also be happy to cover a specific curriculum topic upon request.
