Chemistry: Molecular Detection - Entering Grade 12
Chemists use different equipment to characterize new compounds that they make, or to verify the identity of existing compounds, or for quality control purposes, checking the level of impurity in a substance. The four main techniques that are commonly used include: IR (Infrared), NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), UV-visible spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. During this 2-day event, students will gain basic knowledge about these techniques, and the information that they provide. They also have the opportunity to see demonstrations of these instruments.
