Program Overview
The Empowering Black Excellence in Data Science and Analytics (EBEDSA) program, offered under the Getting Data Science Done Across Borders initiative, is an intensive bootcamp designed to equip Black students with in-demand skills in data science, analytics, and data visualization. Led by Dr. Andy Asare, Assistant Professor of Data Science and Analytics in the Department of Computer Science, the program provides a dynamic and supportive learning environment for students to build practical, career-relevant skills.
Delivered through online learning and interactive presentations, the program offers hands-on, experiential training using industry-leading tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and Generative AI. Participants will gain practical experience in collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing data to support informed decision-making across multidisciplinary contexts.
Throughout the program, students will work with real-world datasets, develop interactive dashboards, and apply data storytelling techniques to communicate insights effectively. The program culminates in a virtual presentation where participants will showcase their projects, share their insights, and engage with peers, faculty, and industry professionals.
Program Objectives
Participants in this program will:
- Describe key concepts in data science and analytics, including applications and the role of data-driven decision-making across industries.
- Collect, clean, and transform data into structured formats suitable for analysis using appropriate data wrangling techniques.
- Apply exploratory data analysis (EDA) techniques to identify patterns, trends, and relationships within datasets.
- Use AI-supported tools and visualization platforms to analyze text data, identify sentiment patterns, and communicate results.
- Develop interactive dashboards that enable users to explore data and derive actionable insights.
- Communicate analytical findings effectively through structured narratives, visualizations, and professional presentations.
