Brewing Up an Idea: The Origin of Brew Lab

That’s the spirit of Brew Lab—a lively event that brings scientists and the community together to share discoveries, spark conversation, and celebrate the joy of learning. With short, engaging talks, trivia, and great company, Brew Lab transforms science communication into a fun, interactive night out.
What to Expect
This edition of Brew Lab is taking place on Wednesday, November 4, and will feature fast-paced science talks that open a window into fascinating new ideas and discoveries. To keep the energy high, the TELUS Spark Science Centre will host a round of trivia, with prizes, that tests your knowledge and invites a bit of friendly competition. Whether you’re here for the talks, the games, or just the atmosphere of Two House Brewing, the evening is designed to inspire curiosity and connect people through science.

Title: Lessons from the Field: What Wildlife Has Taught Me About Research & Relationships
Abstract: From lynx and snowshoe hares in the Yukon to moose research with Indigenous communities, wildlife has shaped both my career and how I understand ecology. Through stories from the field, I’ll explore what animals have taught me about relationships, place, and how we produce knowledge, and how these lessons now guide my work weaving Indigenous and Western scientific ways of knowing.

Title: Rock Go Splash: How Climate Change is Causing Giant Tsunamis
Abstract: In mountain regions around the world, glaciers are retreating and permafrost is degrading. One impact of these changes to the cryosphere is a reduction in slope stability, leading in some cases to very large landslides. Some of these landslides occur over water bodies - rivers, lakes, and ocean - resulting in huge tsunamis hundreds of meters high, which can be catastrophic to any settlements or infrastructure downstream.
