Undergraduate Science Co-op Program 

UCalgary’s Science Co-op students are selected through a comprehensive process and receive ongoing support from dedicated co-op advisors, ensuring professionalism and commitment. 

  • Duration: 4 – 16 months (aligned with semester start dates: September, January, or May). 
  • Time commitment and compensation: full time, paid work (35-40 hours weekly) 
  • Co-ops must be high-quality and supervised work.
  • Co-op students will return to studies after completing their co-op. They are eligible for funding, view funding options here.

While students are enrolled in the Science Co-op Program, they gain access to exclusive career development workshops; writing a resume and cover letter, interview preparation, workplace professionalism, etc.

Students are required to complete several career-related assignments before beginning a work term to best prepare them for the workforce.

Professional Graduate WIL Program

These placements and projects are designed to provide valuable, real-world experience for our students while offering your organization access to advanced skills and innovative solutions. 

  • Duration: 4 months (May-August) 
  • Time commitment: 200 hours minimum
  • Compensation: paid or unpaid 
  • Opportunities must be relevant to the students’ field of study and align with your organization’s needs. 
  • Graduate students end their program on WIL and do not return to studies.

For an opportunity to be considered as Work Integrated Learning, it must adhere to the following criteria:

  • The position must be paid 
  • The position must be full-time 
  • The position must be supervised 
  • The start and end dates must align with UCalgary academic term dates: 
    • Fall: Sept – Dec 
    • Winter: Jan – Apr 
    • Spring/Summer: May – Aug 
  • Students are prepared to hit the ground running and be a primary member of your team! To ensure the opportunity is providing value to their degree, they must be engaging in quality work.  
  • For the duration of their work term, they will be actively enrolled in an academic course titled “COOP 505”. This course is designed to integrate reflections and minor academic assignments into their experience and is used to maintain their full-time student status.  
    • As part of this course, we will connect with employers to request feedback on student performance. 
  • Students are eligible for 4-16 months of work while enrolled in the Science Co-op Program. If the role is aligned with the academic terms above, they can work a contract length of 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, or 16 months.
