BCDI 2030 Quantum Computing Project

Cutting-edge training for AIMS Rwanda and AIMS South Africa students

The Faculty of Science has partnered with the African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS) Rwanda and AIMS South Africa to offer the Professional Quantum Computing Skills Development program. 

Nominated AIMS Rwanda and AIMS South African scholars will complete a four-month professional graduate certificate program in quantum computing and receive post-program mentorship through the Open Quantum Institute. 

This project is funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada. BCDI 2030 is an eight-year, $80 million program funded by Global Affairs Canada. 

Funding support for students

Through the BCDI 2030 program, scholarships will cover: 

  • tuition and fees for the four month graduate certificate in Quantum Computing at the University of Calgary
  • return economy airfare
  • accommodation and living expenses
  • visa fees and health insurance
  • winter clothing allowance
  • books and supplies
  • computing equipment and conference fees

Who can apply?

Scholars must be nominated by AIMS Rwanda or AIMS South Africa. In addition, they must meet the admission requirements to the Quantum Computing program: 

Four-years bachelor’s degree in science or engineering or equivalent from a recognized institution.

  • A minimum admission grade point average of 3.00 on a four-point scale or equivalent, calculated on the last 60 units (20 half-course equivalents) completed in your 4-year Bachelor’s degree (please note that the GPA from Graduate degrees is not included)..
  • Successful completion of the following undergraduate courses, with at least a “B” grade or equivalent:
    • Linear Algebra
    • Computer Programming.
  • Demonstration of English Language Proficiency (ELP) 

How to apply and important dates

Nominated students will be provided with application instructions. To be nominated, please speak to your program representative at AIMS South Africa or AIMS Rwanda. You will need: 

  • your post-secondary transcripts
  • statement of interest (1-2 pages) outlining your interest in quantum computing and your professional career plans

Applications for Fall 2026 will be made by January 2026, with scholars arriving in late August 2026. 

The Quantum Computing certificate consists of four graduate-level courses, taken between September-December:

Quantum Computing 603 - Quantum Software I

Quantum Computing 605 - Applications of Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing 607 - Business of Quantum Computing I
