Bridging the Gender Gap in STEM and Education

Did you know women make up less than 20% of physicists, astronomers, and mathematicians—and men less than 25% of educators? The University of Calgary’s CHOICE Programs are changing that narrative.

These hands-on, one-day experiences are designed to empower Grade 6 students to explore careers in physics, astronomy, and education—fields where gender representation is imbalanced.

Two Programs. One Purpose. Countless Possibilities.

PHAS CHOICE – For girls and gender minorities interested in Physics & Astronomy
EDU CHOICE – For boys and gender minorities curious about careers in Education

Both programs run in parallel at the University of Calgary and include:

  • 5 hours of interactive, mentor-led programming
  • Engaging lab demos, campus tours, and hands-on activities
  • Group rotations through themed learning stations
  • A fun and inspiring introduction to university life

Each school selects the number of students attending each stream. Students identifying as non-binary, transgender, or gender-fluid are free to choose the program that resonates most with them.

PHAS CHOICE – Spark a Love for Physics & Astronomy

Empowering young minds through science exploration

Led by Dr. Laura Mazzino (Assistant Professor, Physics & Astronomy), PHAS CHOICE is now in its third year. This program introduces Grade 6 girls and gender minorities to the exciting world of physics and astronomy.

What to Expect

  • Big physics demonstrations: light spectrums, static electricity, waves, electromagnetism, and more
  • Hands-on experiments in kinematics, space science, Van de Graaff generators, and beyond
  • Mentorship from university students who share their research and passion in small groups
  • Rotating stations with 15-minute learning bursts at each activity
  • Scheduled snack and lunch breaks to keep students energized

New for 2025: EDU CHOICE – Explore the Power of Education

Helping students see themselves as future educators and changemakers

Run in partnership with the Werklund School of Education, EDU CHOICE invites Grade 6 boys and gender minorities to discover the broad world of education—from teaching to community leadership.

What to Expect

  • Hands-on learning stations with interactive group activities and discovery sessions
  • Mentor talks that show how education can shape lives and futures
  • 10–15 minute activity rotations, with snack breaks included

ENRICHMENT CHOICE

Expanding Young Minds Through Discovery, Culture, and Exploration

The Enrichment CHOICE program is designed to spark curiosity and broaden perspectives. Led by Dr. Laura Mazzino (Assistant Professor, Physics & Astronomy), and created in collaboration with UCalgary scholars and community members, this experience is open to all students participating in the PHAS CHOICE and EDU CHOICE programs.

What To Expect

  • A campus tour and scavenger hunt designed to explore UCalgary through games and challenges
  • A meaningful cultural learning experience through Indigenous Ways of Knowing
  • CHOICE EXPO, an opportunity to learn more about other fields in the Faculties of Science and Engineering
