The Schulich School of Engineering is saddened by the death of former acting dean, and Professor Emeritus, Dr. Arthur “Art” McMullen, PhD. Art passed away on Oct. 8 at the age of 88.

Art was born and raised in Nordegg, a hamlet in rural Alberta. In 1954, at the age of 17, he left home for Edmonton where he earned his bachelor’s, master's and PhD in civil engineering from the University of Alberta.

He joined the University of Calgary as a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering in 1967, after relocating with his family, and taught civil engineering until his retirement in 1993. He served as acting dean of the Faculty of Engineering (now Schulich School of Engineering) from January to June 1975.

Over 26 years, he mentored generations of students and helped shape future leaders in engineering. His legacy continues through the Department of Civil Engineering Impact Fund, which supports student experiential learning.

Art also had a love for dance. He and his wife, Collette, were avid square and round dancers. He was a caller for the Hi-Land Swingers and the Queens ’n Jacks square dance clubs. Art and Collette also started their own square dance club, The Acey Pluses (short for A and C), which is still ongoing today.

Art was a loving and cherished husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Department of Civil Engineering Impact Fund. This academic year, it will support UCalgary students going to the Constructionarium Competition in the United Kingdom, where they will gain hands-on experience constructing bridges and buildings.

Art will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the university community.
