Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Training is available to students and research staff at the University of Calgary for the operation of our NMR spectrometers. Users must attend an in-person training session and practice with an experienced user until they are confident with running the instrument without the aid of their instruction sheet. Users can then request a one-on-one practical exam with Rustem Shaykhutdinov. Please note users are expected to demonstrate a deep understanding of NMR operation in this exam. If the user passes, they will be granted access to the NMR facility.

Outside clients should generally contact the instrumentation technicians to arrange sample drop-off and the technicians will perform the necessary experiments.

Mass Spectrometry

Students and staff can contact Rustem Shaykhutdinov for training on the GC-MS instruments.

Other mass spectrometry samples should be submitted in the bins in SB 134 and will be run by the technicians as quickly as possible.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance

Users should contact Rustem Shaykhutdinov for operation of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer (EPR). Users who expect to use the equipment frequently will be trained in its operation.

Elemental Analysis

Elemental Analysis is performed every second Tuesday. Samples should have a uniform particle size (0.2-0.5mm) and a minimum of 3mg of the sample should be submitted. Duplicate analysis is available.

Regular samples must be submitted before 8:30 am on the day of analysis. For air and moisture sensitive samples please contact Jian Jun (Johnson) Li on the day prior to analysis.

Other Instrumentation

Users can be trained in the operation of the other instruments in the facility. Simply email the primary contact for the instrument of interest to make arrangements.
