Casey Hubert

Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science

Dr. Casey Hubert grew up in Yellowknife and attended the University of Calgary, completing BSc and PhD degrees in microbiology before doing a post doc in the Biogeochemistry Department at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Germany. Following this he joined the Geosciences Group at Newcastle University in the UK, supported by a Royal Society Research Fellowship, and established an interdisciplinary environmental microbiology research group. Casey returned to the University of Calgary in 2014 where he has held different research chairs, including a UCalgary Research Excellence Chair. Current research in the Geomicrobiology Group focuses on environmental microbiology and genomics with projects involving subsurface energy applications, collaboration with Inuit to understand and promote healthy marine microbiomes, and monitoring municipal wastewater to reveal population-level trends related to COVID-19 and other pathogens.

The Parex Fellowship offers an exciting opportunity to advance the commercialization of genomics tech related to the future hydrogen economy. Scalable H2 storage requires the use of underground locations where deep biosphere bacteria threaten to ‘eat’ the stored hydrogen, which is an excellent energy source for microbial life. The project will involve a start-up from our lab, Geogenomics Inc. (www.geogenomics.ca), and include on-campus events focused on promoting women entrepreneurs and members of under-represented groups in the innovation start-up space."
