Haskayne School of Business launches Doctor of Business Administration program

The newly launched Haskayne Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program is one of only two English programs like it in Canada. Marked by rigorous research, the Haskayne DBA will result in a professional who can claim the honour of Dr. before their name.

Applications are open until Sept. 15, 2018 for the maximum of 20 spots available in the first cohort that will start January 2019. For professionals considering the DBA program to launch into the next-stage career within their organization, consultancy or teaching, applicants will require 10 years of work experience with seven of those in senior leadership roles. Those entering the program will typically have a master’s degree from an accredited institution. 

While the research pursued by both a PhD and a DBA is demanding, the aim of the research differs. A PhD is working to advance business theory while a DBA is focused on applying theory to advance business practice.

“We are at the forefront of a growing global trend — business doctoral degree programs around the world are innovating to bring together theory with real-world practice,” Jim Dewald, dean, Haskayne School of Business. “We expect the cohort to include local, national and international students.”

The program may also be of interest to post-secondary instructors who are looking to advance in their career by learning research techniques and pursuing research, advancing their knowledge. University of Calgary tuition support program is applicable to the DBA program for eligible University of Calgary faculty and staff. The University of Calgary has a sponsored student process for students who will have their employer paying their tuition.

The majority of the driven individuals in the DBA program will continue to work while they study for the three to four years. Students will complete eight courses (six core courses and two electives), a written field of study exam, a thesis proposal with an oral exam, and a thesis with an oral defense. Coursework will be a mix of online and face-to-face instruction with students required to be on campus for one weekend four to six times a year. The challenge awaits on the other side of a master’s degree — the Haskayne DBA will deliver the next level of personal and professional development.
