Alumnus wins Vanier Scholarship for PhD research

Temi's PhD project looks at how law regulates the low-carbon transition, the limitations of this regulation, and how civil society can address some of these limitations by complementing law through emerging governance mechanisms. He learned about his field of theory, regulation and governance, while working on his LLM thesis at UCalgary Law.

"I had more time to explore the field when I worked with Dr. Fenner Stewart, PhD under the Stikeman Elliot LLP Research Fellowship in Corporate Law in 2016, and as the John Ballem QC LLD Postgraduate Fellow in Energy Law in 2017," explains Temi. "Advised by Professor Alastair Lucas during my LLM, I also completed two papers that led me to the research problem my PhD addresses: one published in Energy Policy identified the limitations of government’s low-carbon policy, and the other published in Journal of Energy and Natural Resources Law identified the factors affecting the oil and gas sector using Alberta as a case study."

The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada's ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.
