The articles describes the synthesis and structural characterization of ion-separated salts of catena-[S12]2- and spiro-[Se11]2- dianions. The findings are relevant to the sulfur/sulfide redox processes that occur in alkali metal-sulfur batteries and in biological systems, as well as the synthesis of organosulfur compounds using a combination of sulfur and alkali-metal carbonates as a reagent.
