When crises hit, they can expose leaders. For some, a crisis exposes incompetence and self-interest, but for others, crisis reveals courage, resilience and deep concern for others. The Haskayne School of Business, the Calgary Chamber and Calgary Foundation are committed to building and supporting leadership in our community of the second type — one that brings out the best in all.

The three organizations have come together to deliver the Distinguished Business Leaders Summit on June 17. The one-hour virtual media production features distinguished and high-profile leaders including Mac Van Wielingen, Alan Norris, Dawn Farrell, George Brookman, Marcos Lopez, Alison Sunstrum, Joanne Ciulla, PhD, David Dick, PhD, Robert Thirsk and Deborah Yedlin.

“Each of our organizations is devoted to meaningful, bold and innovative community engagement,” says Dr. Jim Dewald, dean of the Haskayne School of Business. “Our aim is to inspire the leaders we have in our community — and to nurture an ecosystem that supports ethical leadership.”

The production will feature three panels that will explore the role of ethical leadership in a crisis, in recovery and in transforming organizations for the future. To register for the Distinguished Business Leaders Summit is free of charge; contributions to the Distinguished Business Leader Award Scholarship are appreciated.

Since 1993, the Distinguished Business Leader Award has celebrated the ethical leaders in Calgary with a gala dinner. This annual partnership between the Haskayne School of Business, Calgary Chamber and the Calgary Foundation supports the full spectrum of ethical leadership. There are scholarships for students; emerging entrepreneur scholarships for those starting out in business; and a Distinguished Business Leader Award for a lifetime of achievement in ethical leadership.

The 2020 gala was to have been held on June 17, 2020 but it has been postponed to 2021. Ethical leadership will be celebrated on this date in a different way at the Distinguished Business Leaders Summit. Instead of recognizing an individual and their achievements, the summit will celebrate ethical leadership in action.

Register early for the Distinguished Business Leaders Summit as it promises to attract a broad audience of hundreds of people, and mark the calendar for the 2021 Distinguished Business Leader Award gala on June 21, 2021 to recognize another outstanding and ethical business leader.
