An entrepreneurial mindset, and movement to embrace innovations to promote academic excellence, have helped the University of Calgary continue to climb in international rankings.

UCalgary is ranked 25th in the world in sports-related subjects, according to the latest QS World University Rankings.

“We work hard to ensure the students who chose the University of Calgary have unique opportunities for hands-on learning and research,” says President Ed McCauley. “Our faculty are world-class scholars who are committed to student success. And, as a community, we are known as an inclusive environment where learners feel supported in their academic journey.”

On March 3, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released its annual ranking the world’s top universities in 51 subject areas.

UCalgary is in the top 50 for five subjects and the top 100 for 10 subjects. Of its 31 academic disciplines that were included in the 2021 subject rankings, 32 per cent improved in ranking, 55 per cent stayed the same and only 13 per cent decreased from last year.

UCalgary’s top five-ranked subject areas include:

  • Sports-Related Subjects (5th nationally, 25th globally)
  • Veterinary Science (2nd nationally, 37th globally)
  • Hospitality and Leisure Management (2nd nationally, 44th globally)
  • Engineering – Petroleum (2nd nationally, 46th globally)
  • Nursing (6th nationally, 50th globally)

QS ranks institutions based on four criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and the H-index. Weightings vary from subject to subject, with academic reputation weighted most heavily. QS calculates reputational scores annually via surveys with employers and academics. Respondents are asked to rate the top schools in various subject areas.

The purpose of the QS ranking is to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in their chosen field.

“To rise to the current challenges in higher education, the University of Calgary is building on our success as Canada’s most entrepreneurial university. We are offering future-focused programs, reducing barriers to research, and providing meaningful community engagement, so our students are equipped to thrive in any situation,” says McCauley.
