UCalgary sports-related and veterinary sciences subjects among top in the world
Earlier this week, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, an annual ranking of the world’s top universities in 48 individual subject areas.
The University of Calgary rated among the best in the country and is positioned in the top 50 globally in two of those subject areas.
The rankings placed UCalgary’s sports-related subject area sixth nationally and 30th in the world, while the veterinary science subject ranked third in Canada and 47th among the 1,222 universities ranked this year.
“This is great news,” said President Ed McCauley. “Each year, our university gains further international recognition for our unique academic programming, our trailblazing research, and our high-achieving graduates. Thank you to everyone in this community who has helped us push the limits of human knowledge and broaden UCalgary’s impact on the world around us.”
The University of Calgary did well in a number of other subject areas. Top 100 status was achieved by anatomy and physiology, archaeology, and nursing. These three subject areas placed in the 51-100 rank worldwide. Nationally, the QS subject rankings placed anatomy, physiology, and archeology fifth in Canada, and nursing, seventh in Canada.
The purpose of the QS ranking is to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in their chosen field. Each institution is ranked on four criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, and H-index, a measure of scholarly productivity.
QS derives its reputational scores from their annual surveys with employers and academics, where respondents are asked to rate top schools in various subject areas.
