Faculty of Law announces new internship funding

The Faculty of Law is proud to announce a gift of more than $60,000 from the family of John Poyen and the Sheldon M. Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership to establish The Chumir Foundation John S. Poyen Internship. Over the next four years, the internship will provide a current law student with valuable work experience with an organization that furthers ethics, access to justice or community responsibility.

“We are so grateful for the generous donations made by Mr. Poyen’s family and the Chumir Foundation to create these opportunities for our law students,” said Ian Holloway, dean of the Faculty of Law. “Gifts like these allow us to give students the opportunity to experience the entire breadth of the law, as well as give students an understanding of the importance of community responsibility.”

Beginning in summer 2017, and running for the next four years, one second-year law student who shows a demonstrated interest in promoting, enhancing and serving the broader interests of ethics, access to justice and community service in the legal field will receive $15,000 to participate in a summer internship.

“My father shared Sheldon Chumir’s passion for fostering a fair, productive and harmonious society,” said Catherine Poyen Zemans. “We know he would have deeply valued the opportunity we have to give law students the experience to make a difference in our communities.”
