Giving Day 2024 across campus, part 2

Did you know that some of our top Giving Day funds over the years were successful not because of a few large gifts, but because dozens of people — family, friends, colleagues and neighbours — came together. That’s the power of community. And we want you to be a part of it this Giving Day.

Read on to learn about some of the various areas and initiatives supported by Giving Day. But first, join alum Dan Allard, BComm’09, as he visits the penthouse suite of Science A to learn how he can help fight food insecurity: 

Emergency student support

UCalgary offers emergency support for students in crisis, helping them get back on their feet and focus on what matters most — their education. The Social Work Student Emergency Fund supports Faculty of Social Work students in crisis with immediate assistance and basic necessities. The Ian Holloway Student Emergency Fund similarly supports law students — and commemorates Dr. Ian Holloway’s 13-year tenure as dean of the Faculty of Law.

And UCalgary alumni have extra giving power when it comes to helping students in need. This year, all alumni-made gifts to the Students’ Greatest Needs Fund will be matched by the UCalgary Alumni Association Board, up to $2,500 per gift, while matching funds last.

Indigenous initiatives

The Faculty of Arts Indigenous Student Success Fund advances the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students within the Faculty of Arts — which has the largest Indigenous undergraduate student population — supporting culturally significant activities and intergenerational learning opportunities. 

The Faculty of Science Indigenous Pathways Fund opens doors for aspiring science students, offering individualized academic and cultural support through prerequisite courses — and guaranteeing admission to their degree program upon completion.

The Werklund School of Education’s Books to Build On Fund supports the faculty in creating an interactive web resource designed to assist educators with weaving Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing into their teaching and learning.

Lifelong learning and community engagement

The Faculty of Continuing Education provides high-quality educational opportunities to people here and around the world, empowering them to change their lives and their communities — and the Continuing Education Impact Fund supports equitable and inclusive participation in lifelong learning.

The Libraries and Cultural Resources Impact Fund fuels a dynamic range of initiatives, crafting immersive learning experiences and elevating physical and digital spaces that inspire and connect. The fund also supports youth outreach programming, summer camps and internships.
