Ian Holloway reappointed dean of law
I am pleased to announce that Ian Holloway has been reappointed as dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, effective July 1, 2015 for a six-year term.
In April of this year, Ian indicated his interest to be considered for reappointment. An advisory decanal review committee was then established to consider his performance during his first term and the appropriateness of his reappointment. The committee invited and reviewed commentary from those within the faculty and from the external community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide input.
Ian began his term as dean on July 1, 2011, having served since 2000 as dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario. Prior to this appointment, he was associate dean at the Australian National University (1999-2000), a visiting professor of law at the National University of Singapore (2007) and a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge (1998).
Ian received his Bachelor of Laws in 1985 from the Dalhousie Law School, his Master of Laws in 1992 from University of California at Berkeley, and his PhD from the Australian National University in 1999. He is also an alumnus of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
In 2013-14, Ian served as the legal education and training team leader for the Canadian Bar Association's Futures project. In 2015, he was appointed to the Security Intelligence Review Committee, and made a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada.
Before beginning his academic career, Ian spent a number of years in private practice in Halifax with the Atlantic Canadian law firm of McInnes Cooper, where he focused on labour and employment law. He also served as the law clerk to the chief justice of the Federal Court of Appeal. In 2003, Ian was elected to membership in the American Law Institute, an honour that is held by only a handful of Canadians. In 2004, he was appointed a Queen's Counsel. In 2007, he chaired the review of legal education in Oman.
Beyond the legal sphere, Ian spent 25 years serving in the Royal Canadian and Royal Australian navies. In 1989, he was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration. In 1992, he was awarded the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation, and in 2013, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
During his last decanal term, Ian led a number of notable appointments for the Faculty of Law, including the appointment of 12 new faculty members, a new director of student legal assistance and a new executive director of the Canadian Institute of Resources Law.
He has helped expand the reach and reputation of the faculty, while cultivating strong relationships with the legal community, helping to foster a 99 per cent articling placement rate.
Under Ian’s leadership, the Faculty of Law recently introduced the Calgary Curriculum, launching in September of this year. The Calgary Curriculum is built on the concept of Excellence in Lawyering, which requires strong substantive competence — knowledge and understanding of the concepts, methods, analysis, reasoning and critical perspectives in and about the law, as well as performance — the ability to translate knowledge into action.
Ian has shown his dedication to his faculty through a continued emphasis on innovation and relevance in a changing field. His continued focus on the Faculty of Law being seen as one of Canada’s leading law schools and as a school of choice for prospective students is an inspiration to his colleagues and to the city as a whole.
I would like to thank the members of the advisory decanal review committee, which I chaired, for undertaking the extensive consultation process. They were: Anne Katzenberg, vice-president (research) representative; Lyndsay Campbell, Faculty of Law tenured academic staff representative; Evar Oshionebo, Faculty of Law tenured academic staff representative; Jassmine Girgis, Faculty of Law tenured academic staff representative; Allan Ingelson, Faculty of Law tenured academic staff representative; Susan Graham, General Faculties Council representative; Jaydeep Balakrishnan, General Faculties Council representative; Jim Dewald, decanal representative; Chantel Pegg, AUPE representative; Ali Abel, MaPS representative; Sarah Pousette, undergraduate student representative; Mike Webster, graduate student representative; Kent Donlevy, Faculty Association representative; and Cori Ghitter, community representative.
Please join me in congratulating Ian Holloway on his reappointment.
