UCalgary pays tribute to extraordinary faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars who shape our community

At an afternoon of celebration and ceremony, more than 200 invitees and their guests packed Mac Hall A/B on May 21 to pay tribute to the many UCalgary faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars who make the University of Calgary a great place to learn and work.

With 26 individuals receiving 25-year service awards, 127 individuals receiving 15-year service awards, 27 individuals and teams receiving U Make a Difference Awards, the afternoon honoured those who use their talent and efforts to inspire colleagues through innovation, collaboration and positivity.

While addressing the crowd to open the ceremony, President Ed McCauley emphasized the importance of recognition at the university — and its impact on our community as a whole.

“The Recognition Awards recipients and nominees have each used their talents to promote the extraordinary in our campus culture, programs and research,” Dr. McCauley says. “Every member of our university family has something important to contribute, so it’s essential that we celebrate these achievements and support professional fulfillment through development, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.”

The afternoon of celebrations began with live music, delicious food and over 200 invitees and their guests packing the Mac Hall event space.
One of the best-attended Recognition Awards in our history, MC Rhonda Pylychaty announced the event itself was also certified sustainable at the gold level — making it the 50th gold-certified sustainable event ever to be held on campus.
To kick off the awards, President Ed McCauley highlighted the importance of recognizing greatness, ambition and exceptional contributions made to the University of Calgary.
15-year service awards were presented to individuals who began their careers at the university of Calgary back in 2004.
Nuvyn Peters, vice-president of Development and Alumni Engagement, hosted the celebration of employees who began their UCalgary careers 25-years ago in 1994.
Dru Marshall, provost and vice-president (academic), lead the celebration of the 2019 U Make a Difference Awards recipients.
Sabrina Anderson —a graduate program administrator in the Graduate Science Education Office at Cumming School of Medicine — was nominated in the Innovation and Curiosity category.
Dr. Tara Christie — the My GradSkills Program manager in the Faculty of Graduate Studies — was nominated in the Collaboration and Communication category.
Cecilia de la Rocha —director of faculty development at Werklund in Development and Alumni Engagement —was nominated in the Collaboration and Communication category.
Victoria Hirsche — co-ordinator in Leadership and Student Engagement for Student and Enrolment Services — was nominated in the Collaboration and Communication category
Susan Mide Kiss — senior director, Community Engagement in University Relations — was nominated in the Communication and Collaboration category.
